Couples Counseling
Can our relationship heal?
Yes. Healing is possible. Couples therapy together is not only seen as the most effective and successful form of treatment for relationship building and repair, but also all addictive disorders, as it provides amazing support for partners of addicts and couples who are in the healing process.
What can I expect if we go?
The first 3 to 6 months of couples' recovery are usually the most stressful, encompassing difficulties in communication, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, parenting, past trauma, and finances. Although painful at first, we hold hope for the eventual relief and healing.
Relief: Many hold so much inside and don't understand know how to unburden themselves of the load. Partners often feel a sense of relief at the end of secrecy as well as the validation of their experience of pain.
Anger: Both partners can expect to experience anger. The revelation that the life partner is acting out may trigger anger, pain and betrayal. Either can feel anger about the need to make changes as part of recovery, and partners may blame and shame the other. As uncomfortable as it is, guidance in leaning into these feelings in a safe place creates room for acceptance, healing, and rebuilding.
Hope: The work being done by both partners can bring new life and hope to their relationship.
Shame: The self-esteem of both partners initially may worsen, but with continued work it will improve. Therapy is work, and sometimes that work points to areas deep within we don't like to see or have worked hard to conceal. Recognizing our patterns is how we grow.
Intimacy: When recovering couples begin to communicate at a more intimate level, it is often on issues they have never discussed before. Communication skills such as empathetic listening, being respectful, and expressing vulnerability, are essential to both partners' recovery.
What is the next step?
It can be difficult to take the next step and to seek action. But that might be the most important step of your life. You can schedule an appointment or consultation online or call or email us with any questions you may have.
